Indigo Blanket 5-Panel Caps.

Indigo Blanket 5-Panel Caps.

A blue cap sits on a table.

One of the items we designed specifically for our two-week run at Raggedy Threads was a new 5-panel cap made of vintage African indigo strip-weave blankets from Mali. We source and sell these blankets at our LA flagship store and decided to turn a few them into caps.

African indigo blankets lay on a cutting table, ready to be turned into hats.
Hat molds, used to cut fabric into specific shapes, lay on top of the indigo blankets.

Each blanket is unique, and is made of multiple strips of fabric that are woven by hand on very narrow looms. Every strip in the blanket has two self edges and they are hand sewn side by side to create a wide blanket. We linked with our friends at Knickerbocker Manufacturing Co. to have these blankets cut and sewn into 5-panel caps, while making sure to respect all the construction details that make them beautiful.

Several hats sit on a wooden table surrounded by other vintage accoutrements.

As is the case with any cap that's made of vintage material, you can expect great variance from piece to piece. In the case of these caps, panels were sometimes cut along the grain of the fabric strips and other times at 90 degree angles, so you'll notice that random hand-sewn seams may appear on some of the caps - in our opinion, that's part of the charm. Knickerbocker lined each cap with muslin to give it structure, and finished each one off with a brown oil-tanned leather strap and antique brass clasp.

The Indigo Blanket 5-panel cap retails for $85 and is available exclusively via Raggedy Threads NYC.
